Strengthening Collaboration for a Thriving Tea Industry

On 9 December, the Tea Association of Malawi (TAML) hosted a productive meeting with the Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Hon. Joel Chigona, aimed at strengthening collaboration and addressing key challenges in the tea sector.

Hon. Minister Chigona reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the tea industry, highlighting its significant contribution to Malawi’s economy and employment.

“Your sector remains one of the most valuable not only in job creation, but also in providing dignified jobs that reflect the pillars of the Decent Work Agenda,” he said.

The Minister also praised the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement between TAML and the workers’ union, describing it as a model for fair labour practices. “An operational Collective Bargaining Agreement is a strong signal of functioning social dialogue, one of the core pillars of the Decent Work Agenda,” he explained.

During the meeting, TAML, Ministry representatives, and other stakeholders explored strategies to enhance skills development and innovation in the tea industry, with a focus on improving productivity and competitiveness..
